The Magic of Writers Retreating Together
Reflections on a winter retreat, the power of creative community, and the stories waiting to be told.
I’m just back from leading my fourth retreat for writers, and my heart is full. This time, I had the joy of co-leading with my Book Works partner, Gretchen Schaffer, and it was nothing short of magic. Maybe it was the snow-dusted mountain town, the farmhouse-chic cottages, or the way writers seem to breathe more deeply when they’re together. But I think the real magic was in the people—their stories, their passion, their willingness to show up for themselves and each other.
It’s been nearly a week since I’ve been home, yet I still feel wrapped in the glow of it all.
For four days in Oregon, we gathered as novelists not just to write, but to grow—through workshops on the heart of storytelling and the heart of an author’s brand. We ate soul-satisfying meals, curled up by the fire, and set intentions for what’s next. We talked about the messy middle, the doubts that creep in, and the deep pull to create anyway. We reminded each other that this path—this winding, uncertain, exhilarating path—is one we don’t have to walk alone.

At Nicole Meier Book Coaching, my focus is on helping novelists craft strong, resonant stories. At Book Works, the mission expands—to help writers bring these stories into the world. And during this retreat, I could feel that mission taking root in new ways. Every writer left with a clearer sense of their story and their next steps.
“This retreat was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I really learned how to embrace my identity as a writer, and got custom support and guidance the whole time. Highly recommend!” - retreat attendee
There’s something about retreating—stepping away from the noise of daily life and into a space designed for creativity—that makes all the difference. It’s a gift to yourself, to your writing, to the stories that only you can tell. And if this kind of space calls to you, know that Book Works will be hosting another retreat in the future. If you’d like to be part of it, we’d love to hear from you. Send us a note over at bookworks.co.
In the meantime, keep writing. Keep dreaming. And know that even in the quiet, solitary moments at your desk, you’re never truly alone.
