Whoa. I love this. As an editor, and as a writer, I totally see both ends of this idea of being a "whole writer." You really articulated the everyday struggles of most writers, who, at one point or another stray from their "why." Yes, they can also get their voice drowned out by others. This was a refreshing read for sure. I'm going to give your podcast a listen as well.
I'm taking an online class and I find myself resisting the smart steps to publish. I don't want to follow a formula just to get a book on the shelf. I want to create magic and beauty in my words. The formula equates to an end (book on a shelf) but the desire of an artist isn't always commercial success maybe it's artistic success? The love of something we've created?
Hi Aimee (that's my sister's name and spelling too!) - This is a beautiful and worthy intention. This is your 'why.' Courses are great and informative, but there's not always a one-size-fits-all for creatives. If you'd like to talk it through and get some personalized, actionable next steps, feel free to schedule a Power Hour with me. I'm sharing my calendar here if this feels right for you: https://calendly.com/nicolemeiercalendar/power-hour-1
Thank you so much! Our Moms must have had similar taste. Nicole is my middle name. I'm going to plug away at this for now, take what resonates and leave what doesn't and see what grows. I'll be back for the power hour soon! Thank you!
A synchronicity: today this quote from Matt Damon came into my inbox, nestled beside your wise words. “Success is the process itself.” So true, because the process is where we spend most of our time!
There is so much wisdom here. So much advice in this vein goes straight toward “just write for yourself. Be happy if you never get published.” But I want to be an author whose words are read and knit into someone’s heart. I don’t want to write a diary. Trite “write for yourself” advice inevitably leads me to a place of shame and frustration.
I'm glad it resonates, Sarah. I 100% understand what your mean about not wanting to just write a diary. Your intention of wanting your words to knit into someone's heart is beautiful. Stick with that. Be committed, hone your craft, seek feedback, and give yourself grace. Feel free to reach out if you need additional support. 🧡
Great advice!

Thanks for your comment, A.E. Nice to connect with a fellow editor and writer!
Yes! I agree. Your site looks amazing by the way. :)

I love it when synchronicity happens. This is a great quote. Thanks for sharing, Kathryn!
